When selling your film online, one of the main determining factors for your film's success will be picking the right distribution platforms. In this blog we have listed over 100 online platforms where you can sell and distribute your film.

When picking film distribution platforms there are a couple of crucial aspects to consider starting with the monetisation model. Most platforms fall into one of these 3 monetisation models: AVOD, SVOD, TVOD.
AVOD - Advertising-based video on demand
On AVOD platforms films can be viewed for free but throughout the video you will be shown ads which generate revenue. The most notable example of an AVOD platform is Youtube.
SVOD - Subscription-based video on demand
On SVOD platforms viewers pay a monthly subscription to get access to a selection of films. One of the most popular examples of an SVOD platform is Netflix.
TVOD - Transactional-based video on demand
Finally, on TVOD platforms viewers have to pay to watch each film by either buying or renting it. An example of a TVOD platform is iTunes.
Generally speaking you can distribute your films on AVOD and SVOD platforms simultaneously but you should always keep TVOD separate(it's simply not fair to charge some people for a film and show it for free to others in the same area).
We would therefore recommend one of two strategies:
TVOD
If you have a very topical subject, a bigger marketing budget or well known actors then begin by releasing your film on TVOD as that's likely to make you more money in the short term. There are two things to consider when picking your TVOD platform.
The first are fees: what percentage of the sales will you actually get to keep? For example Vimeo has notoriously low fees and you will keep 90% of all sales.
The second aspect to consider is how well will the platform promote the film for you. With TVOD you will have to do most of your own marketing but some platforms such as Amazon will do better at promoting titles that are already doing well unlike Vimeo where you have to completely rely on your own traffic and marketing.
AVOD & SVOD
If you are releasing a lower budget film without a topical subject, big marketing budget or well known actors then we would recommend going for the AVOD/SVOD strategy. In this strategy you will want to release your film on as many different platforms as possible. Each platform by itself is likely to only bring in a little bit of revenue therefore you will be relying on scale and making sure your film is on as many platforms as possible. This is where the list below comes in handy!
